Visual Connection (also, dynamic bbUI coding).

A few weeks ago, early on a quiet Sunday morning, I felt the familiar buzz in my pocket that means someone had posted a comment in one of my BBM groups. With an ease born of inestimable hours of experience, I whipped out my BlackBerry to mock the person who was wasting their weekend morning by being awake. The mocking never actually happened; as I read the BBM group post from Brian, I decided that the idea was quite good, and worth discussion (Brian also…

Map your BlackBerry 10 as a Network Drive; AKA Easy File Access over WiFi

This is a follow up post for the Map Your PlayBook As A Network Location post I made over a year ago (how time flies!). When you connect your BlackBerry 10 device to your PC, it should automatically connect. However, there might be times when you'd rather not have to connect via USB and would rather transfer files over WiFi. That's what this tutorial is for.

Install BB10 OS 10.0.10.261 onto your Dev Alpha (or Zed10)

If you, like me, are a developer who was lucky enough to get a BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha but isn't in an area that has the Zed10 available for purchase yet, you can still enjoy all the awesomeness that is BlackBerry 10! This morning, our good buddy xSacha leaked an autoloader for BlackBerry 10 OS onto the CrackBerry Forums. For some reason, xSacha released the slightly older 10.0.0.9.2372. Now, that OS download will work on your Dev Alpha, and install full BlackBerry 10 on…

Tutorial - Media Player

*Updated to include link to source, images and sounds on my Github repo* My first Cascades tutorial is about creating a simple Media Player to use for your own custome sound apps. I like the use of dropdowns to choose your own sounds, as the only sample I found online was using system sounds in a drop down I had to play a bit to get what I wanted. Hence this tutorial to make it easier on others. As this is my first tutorial, I…

[Quick Tip] Problems when upgrading/downgrading BlackBerry OS?

Have you had a time where you went to load an operating system onto your BlackBerry, and you start app loader only to see a message stating software for this device is not found? I have run into this issue a few times. The problem I have found is related to multiple registry keys for different builds that are installed on the computer. These keys can be found at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Research In Motion\Apploader\SearchPaths for 64 bit systems and... HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Research In Motion\Apploader\SearchPaths for 32 bit systems. For…

[UPDATED] Sample Cascades Project: 100% QML Video Player

This will be a quick post, but I wanted to get this out there to BB10 developers. This sample project contains a video player example using only QML (no extra C++). The industry in which I work demands a lot of hours to be put in by me during the holiday season, so I haven't been able to do as many posts like this as I originally intended. So, with much haste and without further adieu, download below. Instructions: Download the zip archive below to your hard…

Running a C++ Functions from QML

When I first read about Cascades "they" said use QML for the UI and C++ for the logic.  Okay, great so I wrote a function in C++ and made a pretty UI in QML... Now what?  In this example I'll go through the steps it takes to call a C++ function from the QML.  However this example won't have a pretty UI.

Creating Crochet Buddy HD for BlackBerry PlayBook using bbUI.js

[caption id="attachment_4204" align="aligncenter" width="540" caption="Crochet Buddy HD for the BlackBerry PlayBook"][/caption] Recently, my first ever attempt at app development (Crochet Buddy HD) launched in App World for the BlackBerry PlayBook. Given my level of app development experience prior to embarking creating Crochet Buddy HD (zero), I thought other aspiring developers might benefit from reading a little bit about my experiences along the way—from concept to version 1.0 of my app. The Inspiration On May 1, 2012, the annual BlackBerry World Conference (BBWC) kicked off in…

Getting Started with BBUI.js

In this tutorial, we will get to know the basic structure of BBUI.js. Recently, I developed an app, Crochet Buddy HD, for PlayBook using BBUI.js for UI elements. to developp the app, I essentially only used the actionbarlist,&nbspbuttons, andscreen;elements when creating the UI.  Below, we will create a sample BBUI.js app using some of these elements Before diving in, it is important to become familiar with some of the main features of BBUI.js. First, the action bar... UI Elements: The ‘Action Bar’ The Action Bar…
