Meggy Jr RGB

Recently, a friend introduced me to Arduino.  Rather, he’s been trying to introduce me for a while and I’ve just been too darned busy to play with it.  So, I took on some projects and spent some energy on it this last month.  As a result, I have a handful of posts coming up about open source hardware :) First up, Meggy Jr from evil mad scientist. Not really an arduino, it was a great way to warm back up to soldering and electronics.  The…

Backing Up Your Data

Normally here on OpenSourceBB we focus more on the How To of coding; this article is more a How To on not having the worst day ever: backing up your data. It seems like every few weeks I talk to someone who had some sort of catastrophic data loss regardng their app development - anywhere from losing a few hours of coding work (which sucks, but can be redone), to losing their BlackBerry signing keys and being unable to ever update their apps again (BlackBerry…

How to create Custom Icons for your BlackBerry 10 Device

The thing I most miss about the Java based BlackBerry's is decent Twitter apps - I really wish there was a Twitter app for BB10 that was as good as T4BB or one of the other choices, or as good as Blaq for the PlayBook. A close second to that though is theming - I was very disappointed when BlackBerry decided not to launch Theme Builder for BlackBerry 7, and far more disappointed when it was announced that there would be no BlackBerry 10 Theme…

Map your BlackBerry 10 as a Network Drive; AKA Easy File Access over WiFi

This is a follow up post for the Map Your PlayBook As A Network Location post I made over a year ago (how time flies!). When you connect your BlackBerry 10 device to your PC, it should automatically connect. However, there might be times when you'd rather not have to connect via USB and would rather transfer files over WiFi. That's what this tutorial is for.

Install BB10 OS 10.0.10.261 onto your Dev Alpha (or Zed10)

If you, like me, are a developer who was lucky enough to get a BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha but isn't in an area that has the Zed10 available for purchase yet, you can still enjoy all the awesomeness that is BlackBerry 10! This morning, our good buddy xSacha leaked an autoloader for BlackBerry 10 OS onto the CrackBerry Forums. For some reason, xSacha released the slightly older 10.0.0.9.2372. Now, that OS download will work on your Dev Alpha, and install full BlackBerry 10 on…

Tutorial: Using LocalBar2 Via BlackBerry and PlayBook

When the playbook first launched, many of us were relieved to see a great tool called LocalBar hit the internet. LocalBar allowed us to sideload apps to our PlayBook without the use of a USB cable between the PlayBook and our computer. However when OS2 became available, LocalBar was blocked by RIM and ceased to function. Well our disappointment is over, LocalBar2 is here. It works much like the first incarnation in that it allows .bar files on the PlayBook to be installed from the…

Import – Export your Contacts with Free DropBox Application

I have talked in the past about how much I enjoy the DropBox for Blackberry application, and Jake from bbthemepark, asked me if I noticed you could Import and export your contacts via DropBox which I hadn’t. If you have the free DropBox for BlackBerry application, simply go to your contacts and hit the menu key and select either export or import.  I have quite a few contacts and was actually surprised how quick it exported.
