RIM: In BB10, only one smartphone can be connected to BBM at a time.
Greetings from the road!
I’m currently on my way to visit some family for Thanksgiving, but I was talking with the extraordinarily helpful @BlackBerryDev on Twitter about how BBM on BB10 will work, and thought the update they gave me was worth sharing.
You might have heard about the new BBM 7 beta that’s available in the BlackBerry Beta Zone, with some awesome new features like BBM calling. Another change that happens in BBM 7 is that instead of using your device pin, BBM will now use your BBID)my understanding is that this was necessary for BB10 to work with BBM). When I updated to BBM 7, I was using the same BBID on my Dev Alpha as I use on my day to day BlackBerry. I quickly discovered that only one BlackBerry could use BBM on a single BBID at a time. This is different from how App World works, which will allow you to switch between registered devices on the same BBID with no problem. I believe BlackBerry Protect is the same.
@BlackBerryDev let me know that when BB10 officially launches, only one smartphone will be able to connect to BBM at a time. Somewhat disappointing for anyone with multiple devices, but no real change from the current state of affairs.
The remaining question that begs an answer is, how will that apply to the BlackBerry PlayBook when it gets BlackBerry 10? @BlackBerryDev said only smartphones will be limited in this way, so I’m holding out hope that you’ll be able to have your PlayBook running on the same BBM account as your BlackBerry phone. I’ll update this post if @BlackBerryDev gives clarification on that.
